At the full council meeting of South Cambridgeshire District Council on 2nd October, Leader of the Opposition Cllr Heather Williams asked the Cabinet to apologise to the residents of South Cambridgeshire for the way the Lib Dem administration handled the controversial 4-day week policy.
Results from the public consultation asking residents across Cambridgeshire and Peterborough their views on Local Government Reorganisation came back with a disappointingly low 4% of people in South Cambridgeshire saying they strongly agreed that they trusted their council to make decisions in the best interests of the community. This is the lowest local authority across Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, demonstrating that residents in this district have little faith in South Cambridgeshire Council.
The LibDems refused to apologise or acknowledge that local residents rated the council lowest in the county for trustworthiness.
Cllr Heather Williams says “Trust isn’t something that can be demanded it must be earned and even when its earned trust is a fragile thing. It’s clear that trust is broken and when things have been edited, and questionably biased authors are presented as independent its no wonder that trust is eroded. I had hoped that this motion would be the start of reconciliation between residents and the council. When people can’t trust a local council, who’s duty it is to help them in the hardest and darkest of times, the consequences can be severe. So we are very disappointed that today’s motion was so brutally voted down.”
