Work on the Cambridge South train station at Addenbrooke’s hospital commenced in January and is on track for completion by 2025.
The new £183.6 million station, first proposed in South Cambs by former Leader of the Council Cllr Peter Topping (Conservative), will be a two-storey four-platform station with a ticket office and parking spaces for 1,000 bicycles.
The station could potentially connect to destinations include London, Stansted Airport, Birmingham, Ely and mainland Europe.
The strong progress being made on the station will be music to the ears of the South Cambs Conservative group, who have fought a passionate campaign for the station.
The Conservative councillors were especially pleased with the benefits the new link will bring to hospital patients and staff at Addenbrooke’s, including improved transport options and cleaner air.
Transport Secretary Mark Harper said in March that the project was “on track” to be opened in 2025. Mr Harper praised the “great” proposals which would massively improve transport in the county.
Cllr Heather Williams, Leader of the Conservative group for South Cambs, expressed her delight at the active progress being made.
“Delivering a Cambridge South Station has been a Conservative campaign for many years. The Bio-Medical campus serves not only as a key source of employment, but also offers vital medical services for our area.
“This station will significantly reduce congestion and will greatly benefit those of us who are faced with constant traffic on the way to work or to the hospital.”
